A Day in the life of a Durham Wedding Photographer

Erm, hi! I'm Ste... that’s how I am supposed to start this, right? I've never done a blog before or ever really even thought about doing one. However, I was thinking about my wedding photography and what can I do that's a little extra.

So with that, the goal of this blog is so you can get to know me a little better, you'll get an insight into what goes on behind the scenes. Obviously, I'll add some recent wedding photographs I've taken along the way to add to your wedding Inspiration and with any luck just be the bridesman/groomsman you never knew you needed.

So, maybe a small brief on me and then a little about the business might be a good way to start...

As you already know I'm Ste. I'm one of the many wedding photographers Durham has to offer. I live with my partner Faith, we're engaged and are getting married later this year. We met in Durham on a night out. Neither of us were meant to be out that night, and plans were organised last minute for both. We're both a little alt/different which made us stand out to each other. We ended up chatting and things went from there.

We have a dog called Kora. She's a Boxer/Staffie cross, proper little cutie too! She really doesn't know how big she is, I'll be trying to edit some wedding photographs and she decides that sitting on my lap (all 2.5 stone of her) and licking my face is definitely more fun (it's not!). We also have a corn snake called Nygma (after The Riddler as he has a ? on his head) and a Gargoyle Gecko called Pandora. I'm pleased to say none of the reptiles want to lick my face.

Now on to the business... I'd been a hairdresser for over 10 years. Hairdressing, while it was creative just didn't give me the freedom to express myself enough so I knew I needed to change my career path. I was given a camera as a birthday gift and literally never put it down. I soon upgraded my camera and equipment, taking photographs every day and trying my best to improve and get better, almost like it was a challenge.

After a little time, I knew it was the career I wanted. So, which area of photography to go into... product, corporate, venue? Then, during a hair appointment, my client mentioned their daughter was getting married and still needed to find a wedding photographer. One thing lead to another, we had a meeting and they booked me... then the panic set in, I'd never done a wedding before! I'd not even been to many weddings before. What happens? Where do I stand? What group shots are usually taken? HELP!

I needed help, advice, guidance etc. I decided to head to a wedding fair (I wasn't even getting married) and have a look around other photographers work to see what they were offering. As soon as I walked in the doors, in front of me was an amazing wedding photographer. I nervously approached her stand and asked if she was looking to train anyone up. She gave me her details and asked me to send over some pictures I'd taken. I did, she asked if I'd like to come along to some weddings to learn the ropes a bit. It was amazing, everyone was having fun, don't get me wrong.... I was scared/nervous but had a brilliant day. I've never looked back since.

I've now photographed around 200 weddings and never looked back. It's the best thing I've ever done. Now, I don't really get nervous anymore, but more excited. I've made so many friends and met so many lovely people along the way who have helped and pushed me further, made me step out of my comfort zone and become the best wedding photographer and person I can be.

Fallen star photography, the name came from the book/film Stardust by Neil Gaiman. It's a romantic, fantasy, adventure film so really does have a bit of everything. It's about a guy called Tristan who to be honest is a bit of a sap. Trying to impress a girl (Victoria) who isn't even interested in him, he enters into a magical world to retrieve a fallen star to give to her. When he finds the star (Yvaine) he realises that she's who he's meant to be with.

Soppy... me.... nah! Seriously though, how many of us have actually had similar journeys. We think we have what we need, until that Fallen Star comes along and changes our lives for good!
